*Over 23 Million UK adults haven't learnt the skill of lifesaving CPR, which is crucial for community safety. Around 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur out of hospital, meaning that you're often more likely to perform CPR on a loved one. The RCUK (Resuscitation Council UK) states that there is worrying evidence showing that ethnic minorities from lower income backgrounds are less likely to receive first aid instruction in CPR, and therefore less equipped to help in a medical emergency. This lack of training can be detrimental, especially when it comes to situations like knife wound treatment, where immediate assistance can save lives.*

London has the highest rate of serious knife crimes, with 17.89 offences per 10,000 people, raising concerns about community safety. Cleveland in the North East of England ranks second. A research paper by E Clinical provides a comprehensive description of patient and injury characteristics, highlighting that recent increases in admissions due to knife injuries primarily involve males under 25 years of age. Nearly one in five patients are recidivists, and female knife-injured patients are most likely to be injured in a setting of domestic violence. One in five of our study population required cardiothoracic surgeons' involvement, indicating the need for effective knife wound treatment. While limb injuries may not always be life-threatening, they consume significant resources, including substantial emergency operating theatre utilization. A detailed breakdown of weapons reveals that 14% of injuries were attributed to machetes, possibly linked to gang-related criminal activity. The national TARN registry recognized fewer than half of knife-related admissions, underscoring the importance of first aid instruction in addressing these incidents.
